Future iPhone models will have a 48MP camera and periscope: insights from Min-Chi Kuo
According to the famous insider Min-Chi Kuo, whose information was later confirmed, the iPhone will have an improved camera in the future: the 14 Pro will be equipped with a 48MP model, while the 15 will have a periscope. The increase in resolution will happen as early as 2022, and for both Pro version smartphones.
The goal of a significant increase in resolution
With such a camera, the video quality will be as much as 8K. Today, the resolution of the sensor is 12 million pixels (4000 by 3000), which is not enough to achieve a video resolution of 7680 by 4320. And it will be comfortable for owners of MR glasses, which the company plans to release next year.
As for photos, it’s not yet clear what decision Apple will make: will it be possible to take pictures in 12MP resolution via pixel binning or 48MP like other manufacturers. The company is likely to simplify the interface and not allow consumers to take ultra-high-resolution photos.
Other changes to the iPhone 14 camera
If the insiders leaked earlier are to be believed, there will be an extra lens in the lens, accordingly improving the quality of photos taken on the smartphone. The camera set won’t change, meaning the wide, ultra-wide and the LiDAR-inspired TV will remain, raising big doubts about its necessity. There will be, as before, just a change in the optical scheme, making one lens lighter and the sensor larger. But there probably won’t be any noticeable differences from the 13 Pro. You’ll only see the upgrades when you turn on 8K. At the slightest movement, a straight vertically oriented object will be transformed into a 45° angle.
Expect significant camera improvements
In 2022, there will be a long-awaited update to the front-facing unit. There are certainly reasonable questions as to why the smartphone by which the entire SMM system is built is still equipped with such a weak front-facing camera.
There’s good reason to believe that the Face ID sensors will also be changed, as Apple has decided that they no longer need the so-called “monobrow”. It’s highly likely that the sensors will be hidden under the screen, leaving only the front-facing hole. However, more precise information will be available as the launch of the 14th model of the iPhone gets closer.
The next drastic change is scheduled for 2023. As of today, there is only information that one version of the new smartphone range (and maybe more) will be equipped with a periscope camera, which is usually used to optically zoom in 5 or 10 times compared to the picture taken from the wide-angle smartphone camera.
However, as of today, there is no reliable information on what decision Apple will make: to leave the camera magnification at 2-3 times with the addition of the periscope, or to replace the camera and leave three.
